When a suggestion of Trieste is summoned so exactly into my consciousness [...] wherever I am, I feel myself transported there… It is as though I have been taken, for a brief sententious glimpse, out of time to nowhere. ... When you are among [Trieste's citizens] you know you will not be mocked or resented, because they will not care about your race, your faith, your sex or your nationality, and they suffer fools if not gladly, at least sympathetically.  They laugh easily.  They are easily grateful.  They are never mean.  They are not inhibited by fashion, public opinion or political correctness.  They are exiles in their own communities, because they are always in a minority, but they form a mighty nation, if they only knew it.   It is the nation of nowhere, and I have come to think that its natural capital is Trieste.

Trieste ha una scontrosa grazia. Se piace, è come un ragazzaccio aspro e vorace,
con gli occhi azzurri e mani troppo grandi per regalare un fiore.

I tramonti a Trieste pare che il mare si spalanchi rosso.
Color sodo, non sparso nell’aria, ma attaccato a grossi strati alle cose.
Colore virulento. La scena grandiosa.
Il sole brucia il mare.
Si capisce che non si spegne.

Scendo verso Trieste percorrendo una costa mediterranea e insieme nordica,
come Trieste stessa:
scogliosa, ventosa, selvatica;
con scintilli mediterranei, colori smorzati ma folli;
con luci crude, bianco acuto, d’argento, di piombo.
